HP Deloitte Aim To Establish Industrial-Scale 3D Printing

HP hopes its 3D-printing technology will help overhaul the global manufacturing sector in coming years under anewly announced agreement with Deloitte. The partnership, unveiled Thursday by the Silicon Valley tech stalwart and global consulting giant, aims to implement 3D printers that can effectively replace injection molding in large-scale industrial processes. 3D printing for decades helped companies develop new prototypes, but officials from HP and Deloitte suggested that recent advances in the technology would prompt manufacturers to embrace it for their production operations perhaps in as little as five years time. What we have the opportunity here to do is disrupt a $12 trillion [global] manufacturing industry, HP President and CEO Dion Weisler said during a press conference at the companys Palo Alto, Calif., headquarters. HPintroduced a 3D printer targeting the industrial sectorlast year, and Weisler noted that 3D printing is already more cost-effective than injection molding for a limited number of manufacturing goods. He predicted that new developments in materials science, however, would make that number significantly larger; HP researchers are already working with different Read More »

What is a 3D printer? – Quora

, I own and operate a 3D printer and built a plastic extrusion machine to create my own filament at home. 8+ … What is a 3D printer and what is it used for? A 3D printer is a machine that can create physical parts from computer generated designs. Everything from jewelry, phone cases, buildings, and cars. Most use plastic by melting it just before depositing it on a surface. The plastic then rapidly cools and hardens in place. Buildings are created by using cement, but instead of melting it starts in its wet state and gradually dries once in place. Here is a video of my 3D printer in action: The main advantage of 3D printing is that the material is all stored in one location and the printer head does all the work in getting the material where it needs to be. Also, because the printer is controlled by mechanical parts and motors they can generally do the job much faster and with greater precision and accuracy than any other process. From what Read More »

Breaking Down HP

Hewlett-Packard (HP) recently released awhite paperdetailing its planned 3D printer.HPs Multi Jet Fusion system claims a tenfold increase in build speed, improved part quality with controllable properties like color, elasticity and strength, and better economics than current offerings. The printer functions by inkjet printing binder into a bed of powdered thermoplastic, though the company claimed this technology could ultimately print metals and ceramics. HPs accompanyingpress releasesaid the printers would be available in 2016. Along with its decision tosplitinto two companies, this move into the 3D printing space would appear geared at turning around the companys financial fortunes and reversing adeclining culture of innovation. However, while others have focused on offeringinvestment adviceor lauding the move as primed toradically change manufacturing,a closer reading of the white paper reveals several holes in HPs performance claims, in several key areas: HP is not the first to try to improve printer throughput. Technologies like Loughborough UniversitysHigh Speed Sintering(HSS) printer have achieved similar tenfold improvement in print speed over selective laser sintering (SLS) printers. However, the tradeoff is part precision, as printed Read More »

CEO Meg Whitman inadvertently stated that there would be a big announcement about HPs entry to the 3D printer market in June. This announcement has now been pushed back to the end of HPs fiscal year, which finishes on October 31 During our Annual Meeting of Stockholders on March 19, HP answered a shareholder question about our 3D printing program and inadvertently stated that we would be making a technology announcement in June, when in fact we are planning to make that announcement by the end of our fiscal year. HPs CTO Martin Frink confirmed that HP would be entering the 3D printing market, which he sees as a huge opportunity, in the near future. The 3D printing market has grown by 27% in the last three years and is expected to grow from $2.2 billion in 2012 to $10.8 billion in 2021. Frink also confirmed that HP has a prototype printer Read More »

HP 3D printers tease super-speed and quality

HPis promising to shake up the 3D printer industry with new technology that not only makes the process faster but delivers higher-quality models, with CEO Meg Whitman teasing a reveal in June. Waiting for a current-gen 3D printer to finish is like watching ice melt Whitman snarked during HPs shareholder meeting this week, going on to suggest that the company had figured out a better, swifter way. The amount of time it takes to see results wasnt Whitmans only complaint about existing 3D printers. The surface of the substrate is not perfect she said,PCWorldreports, referring to the final quality of the object, usually created from some sort of heat-activated plastic. We believe we have solved both these problems Whitman concluded, and well be making a big technology announcement in June around how we are going to approach this. However, while domestic-scale 3D printers for the growing audience of makers have become popular over the past twelve months, such as thenew MakerBot Replicator Mini 3Dset to ship this spring, HPs initial offerings will target businesses. HP 3D Printers Expected In June

Even though3D printinghas become popular over the years, the technology isnt widespread in the market. When they first materialized, 3D printers were quite expensive. Over the years costs have come down significantly, but theresa lot more that needs to be doneif companies want to put a 3D printer in every home. HP might have figured out how to do just that. CEO Meg Whitman told investors during the companys annual shareholdermeetingconference call that HP is going to make a big technology announcement regarding 3D printers in June. HP executives predict that global sales of 3D printers will surge to $11 billion by 2021, up from just $2.2 billion in 2012. Therefore the company has more than enough reason to invest in the technology, and to ensure that its products can appeal to the mass market. During the meeting, Whitman said that HP has been able to resolve limitations of the materials that are used in the printing process. The 3D printer market isnt catered to by major companies like HP.
